Donor Criteria and Exclusions

DONOR CRITERIA
Your dog can become part of our Blood Donor Program if they:
• Have a good temperament and are willing to “Volunteer”
• Weigh between 25 and 70 kilograms
• Are between the ages of 1 and 6 years of age (Donors are retired at 8 years of age)
• Are in excellent health!

Exclusions
Your dog will not be able to donate if they:
• Have had a serious health condition
• Have been sick recently (e.g. coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea)
• Have been diagnosed with a heart problem
• Have ever had a seizure
• Have been vaccinated in the past 4 weeks
• Have received medications other than flea, tick and heartworm prevention in the past 2 weeks
• Have had or will have surgery within 4 weeks
• Have ever received a blood transfusion
• Have donated in the last 6 weeks
• Females who have been pregnant and not desexed

When is it time for your pet to stop donating?

  • On your pet’s 8th birthday

  • Following 3 unsuccessful donation attempts

  • If blood bank staff discover a health concern at donation

  • If there is persistently abnormal blood test results
