Clinical context

Why blood typing matters

Determining a patient's blood type is an important part of veterinary transfusion medicine. Blood typing helps veterinary teams identify the blood type of donors and recipients and supports informed transfusion planning.

In dogs, determination of the DEA 1 antigen is strongly recommended before blood transfusion. This helps reduce the risk associated with incompatibility between DEA 1 positive and DEA 1 negative blood.

Canine DEA 1 blood typing

  • Determines whether a canine patient is DEA 1 positive or DEA 1 negative
  • Can be used when blood typing canine donors and recipients
  • Supports compatibility assessment and transfusion planning
  • Suitable for use as part of a veterinary transfusion protocol

Blood typing and crossmatching provide different information and may both form part of transfusion compatibility assessment.

Technology

How Alvedia blood typing technology works

QuickTest and LabTest use the same underlying technology. LabTest is the bulk-packaging version of the same test.

Membrane migration technology

The system is based on the migration of red blood cells on a membrane. Monoclonal antibodies specific to the DEA 1 antigen are incorporated on the membrane and retain red blood cells carrying the DEA 1 antigen.

A positive canine result is characterised by a red line in front of DEA 1. The control line (C) must be positive, confirming that the test has run successfully.

Result interpretation

Results and challenging clinical samples

Most samples produce clear, unambiguous results. Some clinical situations may require additional consideration when interpreting blood typing results.

Positive result — DEA 1 positive

A red line in front of DEA 1 is visible on the membrane. The control line (C) is also positive, confirming the test has run successfully.

Negative result — DEA 1 negative

No red line in front of DEA 1. The control line (C) must still be positive, confirming the test has run successfully.

Challenging clinical samples

The following sample types may require additional consideration. Always refer to the current package insert for guidance.

Very anaemic patients / Low PCV

Very low PCV can produce a doubtful blood typing result. Alvedia provides a specific troubleshooting procedure for low-PCV samples.

Strong auto-agglutination

Strong auto-agglutination may affect blood typing results. Alvedia provides a troubleshooting procedure involving washed red blood cells where appropriate.

Haemolysed samples

Haemolysed samples can produce doubtful results. Refer to the Alvedia troubleshooting procedure for guidance on sample preparation and repeat testing.

Recently transfused patients

If blood type was not determined before transfusion, donor red blood cells may influence the blood typing result. Refer to the Alvedia troubleshooting guidance for interpretation following transfusion.
